The concept of ‘curb appeal’ has always worked differently for commercial office buildings than for retail stores. With office workers increasingly looking at their spaces as potential sites for chance encounters and creativity, and building managers are thus trying to convey this image to potential tenants. With 1,700 square feet of extravagant imagery, ESI Design‘s work with the lobby of Terrell Place in Washington D.C. creates a dazzling display for visitors and daily employees alike.

This building is iconic in the U.S. capital as the expanded former site of the Hecht’s department store. In the 1950’s, Mary Church Terrell, a founding member of the NAACP, led a protest against the segregation of Hecht’s lunch counter. At the time, she was 86 years old. The building was named after her when it was combined with several others and converted to a mixed-use project.

Working with Beacon Capital, ESI set out to make an installation that “breaks the rigid structure of office-life and introduces shared places that encourage impromptu meetings and meditative moments,” said Senior Designer Michael Schneider. They decided that tenants would feel a sense of ownership over the space if the installation reacted to them.
The final installation, which opened on June 30 and is visible through the former department store’s enormous street-level windows, features floor-to-ceiling LED displays, with the largest measuring 80 ft (24 m) wide and 13 ft (4 m) high. The displays, with their glow softened by diffusion screens, have three “content modes”: one that shows changing seasons, another with shifting fields of color, and another showing photos of the U.S. Capital. It uses 14 thermal imaging cameras to track when occupants are standing still, walking and passing through thresholds. The density of people and the overall pattern of their movement also influences the displays.
There is also an ambient sound installation in the main corridor that incorporates city and nature sounds as well as some of what Terrell said to be her favorite music, such as “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn and “Deep River – 24 Negro Melodies” by Samuel Coleridge Taylor. For the complex’s space on the city’s ‘Civil War to Civil Rights’ heritage trail, ESI also added a prominent marker, photos, and information screens to Terrell’s memorial.
